abstract
Sma11-mammal fossils (Insectivora, Chiroptera, Lagomorpha, and Rodentia) of the Hemingfordian Vedder local fauna from the Branch Canyon Sandstone of southern California have been described in Parts I and II of this report. Large-mammal fossils representing Tomarctus cf. T. optatus, Archaeohippus sp., Merychippus carrizoensis, Tayassuinae, Tioholeptus cf. I. calimontanus, Protolabis, and Dromomerycinae are described here. Merychippus tehachapiensis Buwalda and Lewis is considered to be a junior synonym of Merychippus carrizoensis Dougherty. Faunal correlations indicate that the Vedder local fauna is approximately equivalent in age to the Phillips Ranch, Caliente, and Hidden Treasure Spring faunas of the Kin-nick and Caliente Formations of southern California, and to the fauna of the Box Butte Formation of Nebraska. The Vedder local fauna is approximately 17 million years old.
