abstract
Discovery of an additional specimen -- a dentary containing an unerupted last molar -- of the rare Late Cretaceous mammal, Galtolestes pachymandibularis, in strata of Campanian age within the "El Gallo Formation", Baja California del Norte, Mexico, prompted a review of interpretations of this mammal's systematic relationships. Galtolestes is not clearly referable to any of the currently recognized families of eutherian or metatherian mammals. Rather than being a primitive or aberrant member of one of these, possibly Gallolestes is a representative of another lineage of metatherian-eutherian grade of dental evolution that is not referable to either the Eutheria or Metatheria.
